Garden update- Picking peas
1July 15, 2013 by Buffy
Sorry I have not had time to blog. I’ve been a little busy enjoying the Summer. We have had a little beach time and came back to a garden mess. Wow, what can happen in a week! The weeds had a real party while we were gone. Farmer Rick has finally got the garden looking presentable again.
Our tomatoes are growing and producing like wild! Farmer Rick slipped a few pink tomatoes plants into the garden. I have to say, I’m just not a fan of pink tomatoes! I’ll have to keep a better eye on him next year. We have been canning salsa out of the extra tomatoes.
We picked a couple messes of squash before vacation, but came back from vacation to some very sad looking squash plants. They had been over run with squash bugs. So we removed the sick looking plants. We planted some more squash in the back of the garden. I’m taking a lot more aggressive approach toward the squash bugs this time around!
Farmer Rick’s peas are finally starting to produce!
Our cucumbers have been pitiful this year too. I used some left over seed from last year because last year we had a bumper crop of beautiful cucumbers. The same seed, but very different results! This year the few cucumber we have picked are shaped funny and taste very bitter. So we have also replanted them with new seed. I hope this new crop is better.
Our okra is loving the hot dry weather. It just started blooming this week. I’m looking forward to some fried okra!
Our peppers are loving the warm weather too.
Let the canning begin!
The same thing happened to us. Leave for a week and the weeds and bugs seem to know. Your garden is looking great now!
