New Asparagus Bed planted
2April 16, 2014 by Buffy
We are so excited to pick our first asparagus spears. So excited that we ran out and bought more crowns to plant. I have two raised beds in our mostly shady back yard. The asparagus was planted in one bed a couple of years ago and seems to be thriving. So we decided to fill the other bed with asparagus too!
I had some visitors while I planted, a pair of very friendly wild ducks. They checked all my weeds for bugs and ate a few grubs I found.
I’ve never tried planting asparagus before. I bet fresh is so good. Once you plant, do you do anything special?
Wait, and wait and wait! I planted 2 year old crowns so next year will be a limited pick. But the next year should be loaded! I just keep the weeds down and mulch with hay to keep them from freezing in the winter. It looks like a bed of light, airy ferns. Very yummy!
