Squash Burn

Before Frost

Old Jack Frost found his way to my garden!

After Frost

So we I have gathered all that was left of the Summer produce.  It was a very sad garden day!

Do you see all the little squash that would have grown to be wonderful.

I did pick several buckets of bounty!  I’m going to try to wrap some green tomatoes in newspaper and see if I can keep eating tomatoes for a few more weeks.  Have you ever done this?  I heard you wrap them in newspaper and store in a cool place.  You take a tomato out and set it in a sunny window to ripen.  I’m going to give it a try.  We still have sugar snap peas, lettuce, broccoli, spinach, cauliflower and turnips growing in the garden.

I used my green tomatoes to make green tomato chutney. It is yummy.

I did the same thing last week – scurrying around to pick produce before the first freeze. Looks like a nice bounty!!

I picked what was left of my tomatoes and just left them in a bowl. They are slowly turning red on their own, a few at a time. I can’t say that the flavor is as good as sun-ripening, but they are still good. I will be interested to know how wrapping them in newspaper works. I cut some green tomatoes up and put them in stew, recently. The tomatoes pretty much cooked down and left their flavor behind. The flavor of the stew was great!

I’m sorry about your squash, but you’ve got a pretty nice bounty, there!

Cherie used our last green tomatoes to make green tomato bread. Mmm good.
We still have a giant tub of bell peppers rescued from the frost. She’ll probably make soup out of those. We’ve done about everything you can do with jalapenos and still have a lot of them left. Not sure what their fate is.

  5. I do the same thing with my tomatoes and it does work. Just don’t be like me and forget where you stashed them all. You had a great fall harvest for sure! I have a love/hate relationship about the first frost. Hate to see my garden stop but also looking forward to a break.
