Chicken Killer

I lost a couple of chickens to the gnats today.  The gnats suffocate the chickens by getting in their air passages.  I have lost a whole flock to this a few years ago.  It is very disappointing!

It always happens on a still, warm day.  Does anyone have any advice to prevent this?

  1. Wow. I have never heard of this. How did you figure out it was the gnats?

I’ve lost a whole flock in a day before to the gnats. The gnats were thick inside the tractor! I released the remaining chickens into a much larger new chicken pen.

I haven’t heard of this either! How awful!

  3. Wow…that is terrible. I never knew that. We have huge gnat problems here with the horses and I’ve already gone through a large jar of vaseline in their ears and around their sheaths to keep the gnats from eating them alive. Luckily I’ve never had a problem with the chickens. I saw on facebook once of using a 2 liter bottle with vinegar I think to attract them. Maybe google that and see if you can hang some a bit away from the coop to attract them there. Sorry to hear about the chickies!!

That stinks. I didn’t realize that could happen. Sorry, I would be bumming!

I’ve never heard of this either. It seems that everything wants to kill chickens. But this is a new one on me. Hope you come up with a solution.

Also never heard of this! But, there are some plants that naturally repel gnats- you could try potting some to move around with your tractor. http://www.mnn.com/your-home/organic-farming-gardening/stories/12-plants-that-repel-unwanted-insects
