Corona pandemic does not slow climate change in the long term

Although global carbon dioxide emissions fell by about 17 percent in april compared to the previous year in the face of the corona restrictions, according to a report published in new york by several un organizations.

By the beginning of june, however, daily CO2 emissions were already only about five percent below those of 2019. For the year as a whole, the authors of the report forecast a reduction of four to seven percent compared to the previous year’s figures.

Meanwhile, the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has continued to rise, the report says. Even the slight reduction in emissions this year is likely to make little difference. "While many aspects of our lives were disrupted in 2020, climate change has continued unabated, as this report shows," said petteri taalas, head of the world meteorological organization (WMO), a specialized agency of the u.N.

The years 2016 to 2020 will probably be the warmest five-year period since records began – with a global average temperature of 1.1 degrees celsius above that of the period between 1850 and 1900 and 0.24 degrees celsius above that of the years 2011 to 2015.

2020 will be an "unprecedented year for humans and the planet," said UN secretary-general antonio goodres. "The corona virus pandemic has disrupted lives around the world. At the same time, the warming of our planet and the climate crisis has progressed rapidly." Cohesion is now needed. "We must use the recovery from the pandemic as a real opportunity to build a better future."

The climate policy spokeswoman of the greens in the german bundestag, lisa badum, told the german press agency that the economy must now be rethought. "It makes almost no difference whether we briefly emit less CO2, but that very soon we will no longer be blowing any emissions into the atmosphere at all. All subsidies and economic rescue plans must be revoked and should call exclusively for climate-friendly technologies."The climate crisis is a "challenge of the century that we must finally take as seriously as a financial crisis or pandemic".
